Hybrid Software Helix launches SmartDFE Version 6 with GPU-native RIP

The ew release delivers up to 30x faster rendering on variable-data files while expanding color, automation, and workflow capabilities.

Hybrid Software Helix has introduced SmartDFE Version 6, touted as a major update to its digital front end platform for high-speed industrial inkjet presses. The new release adds GPU-native processing to the Harlequin Direct RIP, along with enhancements to color management, automation and operator workflows.

SmartDFE is designed for print OEMs developing digital press solutions, providing technology spanning job creation and workflow through RIP, screening and printhead drive electronics.

With Version 6, Harlequin Direct can operate with either a CPU-native or GPU-native RIP core, allowing press manufacturers to select an architecture based on press performance, system cost and application requirements. Rather than offloading individual processing tasks, the new architecture runs the rendering pipeline directly on the GPU.

According to Hybrid Software Helix, testing using real-world variable-data customer files produced rendering speeds up to 30 times faster than the CPU-native RIP.

“Press manufacturers should not have to choose between getting to market quickly and creating something that is uniquely theirs,” says Justin Bailey, managing director of Hybrid Software Helix. “That principle has always been central to SmartDFE. Version 6 gives OEMs even greater flexibility to optimize and differentiate their press solutions as their performance requirements evolve, especially when printing variable data PDF files.”

Version 6 also introduces a redesigned Job Editor that uses GPU-native rendering to accelerate previews and thumbnails when operators are working with complex PDF files.

Additional enhancements include expanded spot color management and color libraries, improved PrintFlat integration, broader support for 16-bit workflows and OPC UA enhancements aimed at automation and factory integration. The release also includes faster application startup, improved queue management and search capabilities, and other workflow and usability updates.

Hybrid Software Helix will demonstrate SmartDFE Version 6 at LOUPE Americas 2026, September 15-17, at Booth 3007.
